The 'Back To School' Dressage Training Season is Here

 


The Fall has arrived here at Willowview Hill Farm and with it a very busy Fall/Winter dressage season is already underway. 

Paul explains: "We continue to welcome new equine residents as the year goes along and our new programs are being well-received too. In addition to what's going on at home, we are booked for many clinics for the 2027 season already including national and international, and our book only opened a few weeks ago. Please take a look at what is on offer. Here are a few examples."

A great opportunity to get on track with your winter work

Meanwhile, our hay season has finally finished, and what a hard season that was this year with all the weather issues. 

Somehow we managed to remain totally organic in our production (as we have been for 28 years) throughout our harvesting and while other farms have gone to dousing heavy loads of glyco (pickle juice) on their hay crops, we worked with Mother Nature to secure our hay without it getting wet. A more amazing feat than many horse owners realize. While of course, still maintaining the required low moisture levels (less than 14/15%). 

Our 2nd cut was in high demand as usual and is already sold out. But we do have some 1st cut timothy mix available, though that is also selling out fast. 

We don't need to labor the point about the high diesel costs and scarcity of hay this year as it has been all over the press, but if you have a need for some low NSC, organic, clean and green hay please reach out.


 

As winter approaches if you are looking for dressage training board it may not be too late to secure a spot. We are running a waiting list and do have an October 15th through March 15th window likely to come available when one of our residents heads down to Florida. 

Like many horse boarding operations we have made a slight increase to our boarding/training fees to cover the significant increase in costs. Rates and package info can be found at our Dressage Services pages.

Flying Changes Problems Answered

The fun to do, fun to train, dressage flying change is truly like dancing with your horse. Unfortunately all too often issues arise during training that make them less than perfect. Major issues which are very common include swinging of the hindquarters ( which will cause lots of issues with tempi changes so be warned), changes that are late behind, swishing tails during the change, changes that are not forward, where the croup is high and the horse shows stiffness behind. In the latter event the horse will cover very little ground as he is not 'flying' through the change. Dressage and Crossbred Horses - Drafts, Andalusians, Lusitanos and Warmbloods

I was recently talking to a group of students who asked about preference in breed of horse for a successful dressage horse and why Paul and I didn't breed registered warmbloods much anymore. While we bred, imported, trained and loved our 20+ years as a Hanoverian dressage breeder (with a few Oldenburgs thrown in), we came full circle in our breeding program and came back to the beauty of the cross bred horses. Why? The soundness and great temperaments that crossbreds can produce I believe comes from their genetic variety. After so many visits to Verden to purchase horses, the 65% statistic for OCD that was given me by their own vet, Dr. Gerd Bruncken was validated at every turn. Can A Straight Horse Boarding Business Make Money?

The marketplace for horse boarding services has changed in the post-Covid era. A lot. The rising costs that are hitting the farming community in general are no joke. Willowview Hill Farm, Stamford NY   The other day I had a call from a lady who sounded very 'sound', with good horse knowledge that was looking for a straight boarding option for a couple of pleasure-riding horses. Nothing wrong with that. Or with the fact she wanted a boarding space with good standards of horse care and a well-run facility. Trouble is, can she afford it. Are the prices for horse board that people may be used to paying even last year or the year before, realistic in today's marketplace?
